HellBoy 2: The Golden Army

Serge 2012
I just came back from seeing HellBoy 2: The Golden Army. It was better than X-men 3. Which isn't saying much.

Damn.

I'm getting the idea I should wait for it to hit the dollar movies.

That may be. Much as I was looking forward to this movie, I always had a nagging feeling from the coming attraction, and I was right. HB2, like X3, thought that throwing more at the audience meant better. Still, that's not the only thing that bothered me, and half way thru the movie, I figured it out. There was nothing like the moment in the original movie, when Dr.Bruttenholm asks:

What is it that makes a man a man? Is it his origins, the way things start? Or is it something else, something harder to describe?

Hm. Well, at least I found the DVD of Hellboy at Target for only 9 bucks.

I enjoyed that movie. It got me to reading the various comics. As for HB2, you may like it more than I did. Possibly varying mileage and all that. I did smile when HellBoy and fishman Abe Sapien started singing Barry Manilow's "Can't Smile Without You".

I could tell you liked it, which is why I grabbed it when I saw it. ;-)

Alas, the matter-of-fact approach to lovecraftian horror was missing, and bad elves just aren't the same as Nazi killers with windup hearts and with dust in their veins.

F/X channel was showing Hellboy tonight, and I started watching it. I had to tear myself away during a commercial break, or I'd still be out there watching it. Not on a school night, I can't!

The DVD beckons to me.

I laughed, when I saw that scene from the first movie, when the young FBI agent looks at the comic-book with its cover pastiching Grand Master of comics Jack Kirby, then he puts it down and sees the Big Red Guy in the flesh. With lots of kitties around. Which proves that puttytats are the Devil's minions.

Out of curiosity, will your son be watching the Beckoning DVD with you?

I saw that scene. :-)

I dunno if he'll be watching the Beckoning..we might be forced to focus on pirates and tall ships and movies of that ilk. He liked Master and Commander enough to draw a picture of the SS [his name], complete with lookout in the crowsnest..

Well, maybe there's still hope to corrupt the Young One's mind. After all, from sailing ships to that skiffy stuff, it's not that big a step, as Gene Roddenberry once showed.

Oh, yes. The nautical influence is strong in the early Star Trek episodes. They lack mainly the midshipmen toiling in the dark, and the rats in the bilge.

I'm sure those could be CGI-ed in place, though. ;-)

Maybe next year's reboot of Star Trek will have rats.

Speaking of the young FBI agent, is he in the new movie?
16th-Jul-2008 12:42 pm (UTC)
No, and the other FBI agents are rather of the red-shirt variety, if you know what I mean. By the way, did I tell you about the tooth fairies?
17th-Jul-2008 12:41 am (UTC)
I suspected he might not be. (I've been trying to decide whether he should have been or not, and am tending toward the conclusion that it's a question with no good answer that doesn't involve time travel.)

the other FBI agents are rather of the red-shirt variety, if you know what I mean.

Wait - does that mean no Jeffrey Tambour either? That is disappointing.

By the way, did I tell you about the tooth fairies?

No, you didn't. Somehow, though, I get the feeling that you're going to...

You'll be relieved to know that Jeffrey Tambor is in the movie and even is told by Johan Krauz that he can kiss the latter's ectoplasmic schwanzstucker.

As for the toothfairies, you will have to see for yourself. Let me just say that they don't go just for the tooth/penny exchange.
